expandslTM Re-Writes The Business Case For Providing DSL In Previously Uneconomic Areas!

Telcos are unable to provide DSL to as many as 30% of their subscribers

Telcos usually find it uneconomic to provide around 10% to 30% of their subscribers with DSL . Research shows that three problems must be solved before DSL can be economically provided everywhere – “Granularity”, “Reach”, and “Broadband Blockers”.

expandsl is the only solution to all three of these problems

Most importantly, the innovative product architecture solves these problems at a break-through cost per subscriber.

Solution 1: Granularity

In areas where there is low or uncertain demand for DSL, it may not be economical to install a traditional DSLAM. Even a 24-port DSLAM may represent a relatively large initial investment. To complicate things further, some cabinets may be so full that there is not enough space for even a "pizza-box" DSLAM.

expandsl solves this ‘Granularity’ problem with very small fully self-contained DSLAMs that fit into the tightest of spaces. The low cost of these DSLAMs turns the business case positive for many remote cabinets and small Central Office locations. Profit generated from the first unit can then be used to fund further growth.

Solution 2: Reach

Since the higher frequencies utilized by DSL do not reach as far as voice, some customers can receive telephone service, but not DSL.

expandsl solves ‘reach’ with the world’s only fully waterproof and environmentally hardened DSLAM, utilizing existing copper plant for line-powering and backhaul. With this unique architecture, ADSL starts several kilometres/miles further out in the network, being backhauled over SHDSL to the closest cabinet or Central Office.

With the cost of all equipment being shared across up to eight subscribers, expandsl solves ‘reach’ more economically than any alternative.

Solution 3: Broadband Blockers

Some subscribers may be ‘blocked’ from DSL, because they are connected through loading coils or narrow-band pair-gain systems. In either case, removing these broadband blockers can be expensive and time consuming.

expandsl solves ‘broadband blockers’, by co-locating the line-powered remote DSLAM with the broadband blocker. Subscriber lines are connected directly to the remote DSLAM, which splits out the voice, routing it over the existing POTS infrastructure. Data from up to eight subscribers is then backhauled over unloaded copper. As few as one unloaded line need be available for the SHDSL backhaul, saving the expense of unblocking all lines.
