Central Office DSLAMs

C8as:
|
Central-office
8-port ADSL with
Splitters
|

In areas where
there is low or uncertain demand for DSL, it may not be economical to install a traditional DSLAM. Even a 24-port DSLAM may represent a relatively large initial investment. To complicate things further, some cabinets may be so full that there is no room for a traditional DSLAM.

Extel solves this granularity
with a very small fully self-contained 8-port
DSLAM. The low cost of this DSLAM instantly turns the business case positive for many remote cabinets and small Central Office locations, with profit generated from the first unit being used to fund further growth.

Furthermore, the small dimensions of the C8as allow it to be mounted in locations where 24-port "pizza-box" DSLAMs will not fit.
The C8as utilizes the latest DSL chipsets that minimize power consumption and hence radiated heat. So little heat is radiated that the C8as requires no fans, while maintaining full -40C to +65C operating range. This means that the C8as can be deployed in locations where the temperature is already an issue for existing equipment, and hence the heat dissipation of additional equipment is a concern.

With a much lower initial Capital Expenditure than a 24-port DSLAM, the business case for DSL-enabling many cabinets and small COs just turned positive.
