Extel Communications has launched expandsl, the world’s first economic solution to providing DSL everywhere.

expandsl is the first and only solution to overcome all three inhibitors to providing DSL everywhere:

·          Granularity: In areas where there is low or uncertain demand for DSL, and so the business case for investing in a DSLAM is not profitable

·          Reach: Where there are long loop lengths and the technical solution has been too expensive

·          Broadband Blockers: Where the subscriber is connected through narrow-band pair-gain systems or loading coils, and solving this has been prohibitively expensive

“Telcos all over the world are searching for a way to economically provide high-speed Internet service to anyone who wants it, and governments are increasingly turning their attention to having this problem solved.” said Kevin Brown, President & CEO of EXTEL.  We’re extremely proud of our innovative solution, which will help break-down this rapidly emerging ‘digital-divide’”.

By dramatically reducing the cost of overcoming the three biggest inhibitors to providing DSL everywhere, expandsl re-writes the business case for expanding into previously marginal geographic areas.  This is made possible through a highly innovative architecture, marking a disruption in the DSL industry.

expandsl enables telcos to expand DSL availability to low demand density communities, expand DSL reach to long-line customers, and expand utilization of existing external plant copper cables.

expandsl contains an integrated suite of environmentally hardened equipment located at Central Office exchanges or in DLC cabinets, combined with remote-located equipment that is line-powered, and environmentally hardened, including full waterproofing.

Greg Toland, Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer said “EXTEL has leveraged some of the hottest chipset technology emerging from DSL chipset vendors, with EXTEL’s competence in developing remote, line powered, environmentally hardened equipment, the result being the world’s first fully waterproof, line-powered, pole, pit or man-hole mountable DSLAM.”

“There are a handful of solutions already on the market, but none provide an integrated solution to all three major inhibitors to 100% DSL coverage.” said Robert Salier, EXTEL’s Director of Product Management.  “Our unique architecture enables breakthrough costs per subscriber, and is the only solution allowing telcos to profitably harvest the high-hanging fruit.”

The first expandsl equipment will ship in Q3 this year.  EXTEL is exhibiting working expandsl hardware all week at booth number 22451, and is hosting an overview presentation of expandsl on Wednesday 4th June, 1:45 to 2:10pm in the Supercomm Exploration Theatre.
