Extel Communications Eliminates Barriers to DSL Deployment in Underserved Areas

Richardson, Texas

June 21, 2004

Extel Communications, Inc. announces its second release of the expandsl product family – designed to overcome the DSL deployment barriers of long cables, load coils or pair gain/carrier systems.  Extel’s expandsl product family empowers carriers to offer DSL to an expanded range of customers.

This latest release allows carriers to quickly and economically expand their DSL service area by pushing the DSLAM closer to the customer while retaining their existing copper plant.

Extel has successfully completed several field trials of this new line-powered and waterproof DSLAM.  In each case, the DSLAM allowed the carrier to deliver DSL to areas that were previously unserviceable.  Brandenburg Telephone Company is one of the carriers who recently completed a field trial of the expandsl product.

“Brandenburg Telephone is committed to making economical broadband services available to 100% of our customer base.  Extel’s expandsl reach solution allows us to do just that with technology that will supply high-speed DSL service to customers that we previously could not reach at all” said George Lewis, Central Office Supervisor of Brandenburg Telephone. “It also allows us to respond to customer requests for service quickly.  Our expandsl system was installed with DSL service to our customers in less than one day.”

expandsl enables carriers to expand DSL service to communities that are underserved or previously thought to be too remote for high-speed DSL service.  The expandsl product line is designed for rapid, low cost deployments.  It can accommodate a wide range of installation options including central office, non-environmentally controlled cabinets, and outdoor poles or man holes.

“Extel supports the idea that economical broadband service should be available to everyone.  We are committed to helping carriers meet that goal by eliminating barriers to high-speed DSL deployment,” said Kevin Brown, President and CEO of Extel.
